My friend recently installed ceramic tiles, some tiles have dried thinset on them and he failed to completely remove it which came up through some of the tile joints. Wondering is there chemical he can use to make this job easier? Please pass on some easy tips to perform this task. Well, we have planned to visit Walmart and Home Depot this weekend to check out some effective stuff.

As far as I know there are no chemicals to disssolve thin set(adhesive).

You can use a combination of wetting the thin set, then scraping it with a utility knife.

If the thin set is on the tile surface then a non-metalic pan scrubber and water should remove it. Just use lots of elbow grease.

Good luck. wink.gif

Is it modified thinset?
Dealrocker, you might be better trying a American based tile forum. www.johnbridge.com is one fo the best.

When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. It can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it's well to add something for the risk you run. And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better!"

Basically there is no magic solution. It depends on a lot of factors. How thick the coating of thinset is, How long it has been down. Whether it is modified as Brantey said, Type of Tiles, Sq Ft involved etc etc.

In the USA you can access a product call Aqua Mix Phosphoric Acid Cleaner so if the thinset is not modified you could try that. If it is modified you will need to soak it in Aqua Mix Sealing & Coating remover to try and break the polymers down in the adhesive first and then use the Phosphoric Acid. All this assuming that the tiles are not calcium sensitive and how many Sq Ft you are talking about. Overall if it is not too big an area it may be less expensive to just re-tile.
